Double Guest Bedroom Reveal | Get Your Home Guest-Ready

Today we’re continuing our Mount Royal tour with a double reveal of two guest bedrooms—but first let’s kick it off with a few tips on how to get your guest bedroom ready for the holidays!

  1. Get practical. The first thing your guests are going to do when they walk into your guest bedroom is plop their suitcases on the bed or unzip them on the floor, only to have their clothes burst all over the room. How can this be avoided? By having an ottoman or bench at the foot of the bed or against the wall.
  2. Clean and organize. If your guest bedroom used to be inhabited by your now-adult kids, then maybe it’s worth cleaning out those bedside table and dresser drawers and donating those never-to-be-worn-again clothes hanging in the closet to make room for your guests’ belongings.
  3. Put on fresh sheets. There’s nothing like giving your guests that extra warm welcome with clean, fresh sheets. Spritz an air freshener over and under the duvet for an extra-fresh bonus. We love Saje’s Sweet Sheet spray.
  4. Open the window. We’re obviously from Calgary, so winter can get darn cold, but if it isn’t too frigid, freshen up the guest bedroom by opening the window a teensy tiny bit. Your guests will appreciate the crisp, clean air when they walk in to their temporary holiday home.
  5. Leave a note. It’s hard to entertain your guests around the clock, especially when preparing big holiday dinners, so a little note on the bedside table listing your favourite coffee shops or boutiques nearby for your guests to explore in their downtime is a nice touch. This is also a good place to keep the Wi-Fi password as that question will surely come up.
  6. Get them in the mood. During the holidays, get a little festive with a bedside vase of winter foliage, like sprigs of cedar and Carolina Sapphire. Feel free to go a little further and add a few candy canes too. The scents of evergreen and peppermint will get your guests in the Christmas spirit, while the touch of greenery will bring life to the room.

Getting your guest bedroom ready for entertaining is all about freshening up the space and creating a welcoming (and clean) temporary home for your friends and family. Now let’s have some more fun with our Mount Royal client’s guest bedroom reveal!

Guest Bedroom No. 1 | The Bachelor Bedroom

We nicknamed the guest bedrooms the “Bachelor Bedroom” and the “Bachelorette Bedroom” because they were each other’s twin, and one was slightly masculine and one was slightly feminine.

Both guest bedrooms were clearly not lived in and just needed a little love to spruce them up. Our client wanted us to keep the existing furniture and work with his beautiful rugs. Up for the challenge, we felt that the biggest impact we could provide would be switching out the bedding and ceiling light fixture, and adding a few outstanding pieces of art.

By adding art, switching out the previously busy sheets with simple white sheets and throwing in accent pillows in colours that compliment the art – we’ve livened up the space and but kept it calming. This guest bedroom is now so serene – when you walk by in you want to do a double take to see what else is going on in here.

New towels and flower filled vases are the little details that your guests will remember and appreciate. You don’t need to break the bank at the florists, just pick up a few stems of baby’s breath or sea holly.

Guest Bedroom No.2 | The Bachelorette Bedroom

The Bachelorette needed not only love but life too. We added three pieces of leafy art above the bed, switched the bedding from dark to white, and took the light fixture from insignificant to exceptional. The darker beside lamps help ground the space, and the accessories and pillows (those striped bolsters!) liven it up. Sometimes the smallest changes have the biggest impact.

In the en-suite, we focused on crisp and clean, so we had a custom, slightly nautical, shower curtain made in a simple navy blue trellis pattern.

Have we succeeded in giving you a little nudge to get your guest bedrooms in order for the holiday season? If you have any other tricks or tips for making your guests feel special, we’d love to hear about it below.
